This game takes its name and format from one of the most successful electronic memory toys ever made: four colored pads that light up in a growing sequence, which you have to watch carefully and then repeat back exactly, one pad at a time. Round one asks you to remember a single flash. By round ten, you're holding an entire ten-step sequence in your head with no notes, no hints, and no second chances — one wrong pad ends the run right there.

A toy that shaped how people think about memory games

The original electronic version launched in the late 1970s as a compact, four-button, four-color device that produced a distinct tone for each pad, and it became one of the defining handheld games of its era. Part of what made it so effective was that it used two senses at once — sight and sound — to encode each step of the sequence, which meaningfully outperforms visual memory alone for most people. That basic design (growing sequence, multi-sensory feedback, single-mistake elimination) has been copied and adapted into dozens of party games, mobile apps, and, now, browser games, because the underlying loop is genuinely well-built rather than just nostalgic.

How to play this version

Press start and watch the four colored pads — red, amber, mint, and violet — flash in sequence. Once the sequence finishes playing, click the pads back in the exact same order you saw them light up. Get the whole sequence right and the game immediately adds one more step and plays the new, longer sequence back to you; get any single pad wrong and the run ends there, with your final round recorded against your personal best, saved locally so you always know the number to beat.

Why the difficulty curve feels so sharp

Working memory for arbitrary sequences has well-studied limits — most people can reliably hold somewhere around four to seven discrete items in mind at once without a specific memory technique to extend that. Simon Says starts well below that ceiling, which is why the first several rounds feel almost trivially easy, but it keeps adding one step per round with no upper limit, which means the game is specifically designed to march you straight past your natural capacity and see how you cope once you're there. The jump in perceived difficulty from round six to round ten isn't a change in the game's mechanics; it's you crossing your own memory ceiling and needing an actual strategy rather than just paying attention.

Techniques that extend how far you can go

The most effective approach once sequences get long is chunking — mentally grouping the flashes into small clusters of two or three rather than trying to hold ten individual, disconnected colors in mind. A sequence like red-amber-mint-mint-violet-red becomes much easier to retain as three chunks (red-amber, mint-mint, violet-red) than as six separate items. Saying the color names to yourself as they flash, even silently, also helps meaningfully, since it adds a verbal memory trace alongside the purely visual one, similar to how the original toy's distinct tones gave players two channels of information instead of one. Finally, resist the urge to react to each pad immediately as you recall it; a small pause to confirm the next one or two steps in your head before clicking reduces the kind of rushed misclicks that end otherwise-solid runs.

Sequential recall — holding an ordered list in mind and reproducing it exactly — is a specific and useful subset of working memory, distinct from the kind of associative recall used in something like Memory Match. It's closer to the mental skill used when following multi-step spoken directions or recalling a phone number just long enough to dial it.
